My brother's Walkway / Pump & Well

My brother took a barrel (or whatever you call it) and added the pump to it, along with a walkway he made. I believe he has this working at times so the water runs out of the pump to make it look like a fountain.

Note from yesterday: Our phone lines and water were out from about 8 pm on Friday till about 9 pm on Saturday. Both are back on and I'm glad. It's amazing how you miss the computer right away when you can't get on.

No doubt about it. Your brother has set up a "pitcher pump" called that because the spout looks like a cream pitcher's spout.

These are shallow well pumps as there is not enough pump handle or piston length to hoist up water from deep wells. These were used for shallow wells that were dug by hand and they were also used to pump water out of rainwater cisterns.

When I was a boy we had a pump like this in our kitchen that pumped water from the cistern. If we wanted water to use in cooking or to drink we had to go outside and pump the water from the deep well.

And, when my wife Patty and I got married in 1955, we had a pump just like this one in our kitchen and it was connected to the cistern.

Deep well pumps were either drove by machine or drilled by machine. And those pumps were larger with big long handles.

Nice post. Brought back a flood of memories as you can see.

Surprise, surprise, surprise. It's me!

Interesting. I like old-timey stuff like this. I have an old iron pot that that used to be a goldfish container, but the dogs kept jumping in it, and it's too big to dump a bunch of dirt in it for flowers. Perhaps, it can be recycled for use as it was originally intended...boiling clothes or soap or something!

I love it when people put work like that into their walk ways -- makes me want to do the same. :)

Nice work by your brother - we had these at campgrounds ( unless it was the "deep well" ones that Abraham describes).

Makes a great looking fountain. We have a small, electric fountain out back that I turn on when we're out back. I love the sound of water.
