The Hitching Post

Belleville is about a 50 minute drive from Bellefonte. In the summer, and every Wednesday they have a livestock auction, flea market and fresh produce sell. Alot of the Amish go there with their homemade things to sell. If you want to learn more about the Amish people and their lifestyle you can go here: http://www.800padutch.com/amish.shtml This photo is where they hitch up their horses while they're at the sell. I'll have a few more photo's that follow.

Nice photo. Even better is your story of the Amish.
There's a lesson to learn from them. Such strong values and following the scriptures is the need of the hour.

I don't think most of America are ready to step back in time to a simpler life such as the style Amish, Dunkards, old-fahioned German Baptists and others, lead, but it might come to that as the world's resources are consumed and water is contaminated by things like insect killers and weed killers not to mention solvents and other hard chemicals in landfills that leach into ground water. On top of this is the problems with Global warming and the issues that brings to the front of the line. We might have to hitch our horses to a different way of life and we still have time to learn how to do that.

I tell people like I did back in the 1970s, you can cut your water consumption by half every time you pee two times in the toilet before you flush one time. That's a 50% water savings right there.

Anyway, I saw the horses in a row and it reminded me that is the way the streets looked when I was growing up and my village was not in Amish country. Just ordinary Buckeye country here in SW Ohio.

I like your photo and the horses.

If you have not seen a big ant then it might be worth seeing my post this morning.

That's a great photo! I've always been very fascinated by the Amish and their culture. I've never been to the market in Belleville. (We go to the one in Lewisburg sometimes when I'm home.) I love your photo of the horses! (Thanks for the link too.)

When I see the word "Amish", I think of this film "Witness", a rather old film but maybe do you remember it? I'll come back tomorrow to see your next photos, have a good day!

I remember similar scenes when I was growing up. There were hitching posts and water troughs in front of the courthouse. Wagons pulled by mules came to town and left their waste on the street, right in front of our house! Oh, but it was fun to sit in the front yard and watch the wagons with their produce on the back.

I have seen buggies and Amish people outskirt of Cleveland, but to tell you the truth, I have never seen their horses line up like that in one market event on summer. Excellent shot.

This reminded me of a trip I made a few year ago to a small town in Oklahoma. Not because the scenes look alike or the reference to the Amish. No what triggered the memory was your reference to a livestock auction ... We asked the best restaurant was. She said that would the stockyard cafe. We drove looking for a cafe named the stockyard and found what she really meant was the cafe at the stockyard.

Thanks for the link. It must be a great flea market I suppose.

Great contrast, the horses hitched behind modern vehicles. The Amish are a very interesting people. We can learn a lot from their way of life. They certainly know how to cut out the middleman in their business transactions and get top value for their product while providing it at a reasonable price.

Interesting that I got my last post from your old home area. I live about 50 south of Raystown and very seldom visit it (I haven't been impresssed with the fishing so far). That photo was taken near Aitch as is todays post.

Like your title!
And speaking of names - there must have been some french influence in naming those towns - Belleville, Bellefonte...

A nice shot & it was nice knowing about the Amish people. In India, we have mainly auctions of cows in some places.

I've never been to this part of the country, just read about it and have seen it some on TV. Love the shot of the horses lined up. Makes me wonder if they're content to just sit there like that for very long.

I was up in the Lancaster area a number of years ago, and drove by an Amish factory where they made furniture. I don’t recall if it was Saturday or Sunday, but the place was closed down apart from the owner and his two boys. I struck up a conversation with the owner, and he showed me around the factory. They used air pressure to run all the tools, and did absolutely wonderful work! I wanted to buy a large number of pieces for my home, but he would not sell to me. He explained that his relationship with his dealers was very important to him, and he would not violate that trust. I had immense respect for that, as it is rather rare these days. He did however tell me, with a glint in his eye, that if I wanted a good deal on his furniture, I should visit Peaceful Valley in Intercourse PA. He explained that he had no idea how they did it, but they by far had the smallest markup. He was absolutely right. I have been there a few times, and there are always trucks with trailers all over the parking lot with people filling them up. We did the same one day, and bought a dozen pieces which will be in the family for a long time. Thanks for bring back memories from a few years ago!
