Tucker with Weight Control

Today is Camera Critters and I thought I'd show you my dog Tucker in a happy mood. He loves to lay on his back and scratch when we go outside. (Tucker is the photo at the top of my blog too.)

The doctor said he needs to lose some weight or he'd end up with health problems like Diabetes, knee problems, etc. He has started out at 36 lbs and has lost 2 lbs in two months. I guess that's good for a small dog. He needs to lose at least another 14 lbs. We've taken away all snack foods and have reduced his food down to 1/2 cup, twice a day. Recommend allowance according to the doctor. Sometimes he gets a snack here and there, but nothing like he was. At this rate he'll reach his goal by next Christmas.

Does Tucker snack before going to bed? My biggest problem is a handful of pretzels or a small dish of ice cream. In about a year or two that habit added up to 40 pounds. You'd think I could just turn something off and lose it but no such luck yet. I got to get some off as I am now 74 years of age and I don't want to be responsible for giving my pall bearers a hernia -- should I kick the bucket tomorrow.

You're right to see to his diet. It's good for all living creatures including humans to have a healthy diet and much exercise( I forget that sometimes!) Thanks for showing your doggie's photo. He looks very happy!

Awww! Give Tucker a tummy rub for me!

Glad to hear he's beginning to lose weight. You want him to stay with you a long, long time! Our dog's 14 years old and I have to watch his diet very carefully too — low-protein, in his case.

Tucker is so cute. Good that you are starting his diet now than later.

Good luck with the doggie diet. We have one dog who is in good shape and is a picky eater and another who needs to lose weight and will eat anything and everything.

Love the photograph. You've captured a happy dog. Do keep up the diet. Most dogs will just eat and eat. We think they must be hungry but they are just greedy. He'll be so much healthier and so much more energetic and most of all will live longer with the right weight. Sounds as if you are doing really well already. You can give carrots as a snack. Raw carrots - dogs love them.

Tucker is so cute and looks so happy! I know what you mean about taking care of our pets; Salty and I have a beagle named Sparky; he is 14 years old and has heart problems.

Good luck Tucker! Tucker, if you want someone to talk to who can relate, you can come over and talk to my Molly. Molly has to diet quite regularly, and she's never very happy about it.

We're very lucky. We have greyhounds and they tend to keep their lithe figures very well. I don't have to ration mine at all, despite the fact that one of them will eat all day!
