I guess sales improve in a party-like atmosphere. Balloons certainly get your attention -- Bright colours against the sky.
My little girl would have loved that fist full of balloons and would have climbed that rope to the sky to get them!
The contrast between all those colourful balloons and the sky provided a great photo!

I always say that the foreground makes the picture. You have prove that.
Re Bill Bryson books: I have read three or four, but with all the books I brought home I think I'll have about a year's supply of reading matter (I have number of magazines etc that I also like to follow up - and who knows what happens the next time I enter a book shop?)

I had a some photos similar to these. I used mine on an odd shot - I think because I took mine at an angle.

They're pretty impressive balloons, they never do anything that interesting with them here in Tasmania.

I'm guessing you don't get much wind there. By late afternoon most days, the string would be almost horizontal here as the sea breeze kicks in!
I wonder how many people buy a car because they have balloons flying?
