I really like skunks. I used to have one as a pet. They are beautiful animals and will even go in the litter box. I also have my kitchen done up in alot of skunk photos and collectables. Anyway, when I seen this, I had to take a photo of it. I wish I had one of these mailboxes.
Another animal you maybe familar with, is Phil the groundhog. In PA it's a big deal to see whether or not he sees his shadow. They are showing it live on the Internet at their offical site starting at 7 am EST. If you want to take a look, go here: http://groundhog.visitpa.com/index.html
I forgot about theme day till the end of the day. Please take a look below of yesterdays post to see "when people think of my city, they think of", the theme for Feb.
Welcome to my blog where I try to post a photo taken somewhere in or around Bellefonte, PA each day or close to it. I also post various meme's here such as (ABC Wed., Skywatch Fri., Photo Meme's, Camera Critters, Weekend Mailbox) that I participate in each week, which are also focused in or around my town.

Hahaha, this is very interesting. And look where the mail box opening is....lol. I guess the mail man would wear a gas mask when he delivered letters to this family. :)
I enjoyed your post and photo and it reminded me that around here, honestly, that mailbox would only last one day. The next morning it would be wrecked. Kids, they say, hit them with baseball bats.
I like skunks too but mother said, a long time ago that I should never mess with a skunk. I guess your skunk was "fixed."
okay... I have been looking at your blog for a while and finally had to comment!... (I found it through Lori's blog - I am her aunt!)... anyway, the old library recently and now the governor's theme is making me homesick for my childhood days in Bellefonte!!... my best friend lived in the governor's mansion (after it was turned into "small" apartments!!) and I spent a lot of happy hours there!...
I have seen many strange mailboxes but never a skunk.
Different, anyway, never seen a skunk.
Bet you pleased you took that photo.
Visit me and see the Unusual!!
A skunk as a mailbox? Well, maybe to receive the bills aond the IRS ...
Like my aunt said above, your blog makes me homesick for Bellefonte too! I love the skunk mailbox. I can't believe you had one as a pet. That's a very interesting fact about you!
I am embarrassed to say my only 'experience' with skunks is from the cartoons, or from Disneyland on TV when I was a little tacka. I would never have imagined them to be pets, but...well, now I know differently. Lots to catch up on in your blog.
Call me naive but i always associate skunks with funny bas smelling animals. Thanks for the info, now i know that they can be domesticated too.
Just a little more info on skunks. I had purchased my skunk from a licensed dealer who raises them domesticated. I wouldn't recommend anyone going out in the wild to get one. They have all colors now, there are white with black strips, spotted, silver backs, black with white strips, brown ones, and pure white ones. In my state you are only allowed to own one if you carry your permit papers with you, which you get from the dealer. There are alot of states where you are not allowed to own one. You'd have to check your state rules. Another thing is you really need to know how to take care of them. I've always wanted one since I was a child and love them, but if you have any doubts you shouldn't get one. They make great pets though.
Lawstude, They don't smell if you get them decented. They are actually cleaner than a cat.
Abe, I'm surprised that mailbox is still there too. They've had that box for years.
Lori and Peggy, Sorry to be making you homesick. I've live here for about 15 yrs. My hometown is about an hour away.
Quint, that's funny about the taxes.
I enjoy watching the skunks out the window. Except when the cats play with them. Then I have these little mini heart attacks. So far, all has gone well. They have had no misunderstandings. I wonder why I never thought of doing up my mailbox like this. It's so cute.
so interesting and cute!
well I've watched the Groundhog Movie before and never understood what it was all about - I thought it was about days repeating themselves - now as of yesterday I realise it is all about shadows predicting the weather - well I hope you don't send your six weeks of winter thisaway.
I've been reading about skunks too but thats another matter.
what an interesting blog......I loved the mailbox!! How long did you have the skunk as a pet? Do they shed?
Neva, I had my skunk for about 7 years. I gave her to another family who had 19 skunks and mine made #20 for them. I found the best home for her I could. I never wanted to get rid of her but went back and forth with myself with it for about 6 months. That was only because I was working full time, new grandson and couldn't spend time with her. I felt like I was doing her a diservice to keep her without another skunk buddy around to play with. The old saying; If you love something, set it free. She was decented so I couldn't set her free so gave her the oportunity she needed to help her. They really should have a companion. Anyway, I hope someday I can get two more together when I know I can spend the time with them they deserve.
About shedding, they rarely are shedders. They have a little shedding but not much. If you are allergic to cats, you really should go with a skunk. The only thing is they need a special diet and you need to see if you can find a vet in your area before getting one. Also, you need to check your own state to see if you can even own one. I wouldn't recommend anyone getting one until you know how to take care of them. They make great pets if you know how to care of them.
Now that is different. Never thought of having a skunk for a pet, but I can imagine they could be fun - but I guess you just have to be nice to them :)
Does the mail person lean to one side when opening it ( tail mail )? I sure wouldn' t check the mail on April 1st ( April Fools Day ).
This is my first time at your blog(s)- I' ll be back !
How cool is this? I lived for about 2 years at the corner of Strouse and Woodycrest. That's 1 block away from this mailbox. It used to bring a smile every time I saw it.
